My Crystal Reports Background

My first experience with Crystal Reports was working for a commercial software company. The reports were deemed insignificant and given the least amount of attention from management and programmers, yet they were the most important aspect of the software for the customers. As the newest team member, the reports became my responsibility and I quickly learned how to use Crystal Reports to extract the correct data and present it in a professional way. Even as I moved up to manage teams of developers, I would still be counted on to code the most difficult and critical sales commission reports for our software.

In other positions, I worked on reports for internal consumption as part of IT/IS teams. I learned early on that Accounting and Finance professionals are the most dedicated about checking and cross checking the data. This close scrutiny helped to further hone my Crystal skills.

In some situations, poor database design can make designing an efficient report extremely difficult. In these cases, I often write complex stored procedures to form the data into a more reportable form. This is a great way to make reports more efficient as well if they are pulling a large about of data. In extreme cases, I have even written SQL Server jobs to run nightly and collect data into new more database tables which are more report-friendly. I'm first and foremost a problem solver, so I also employ my software or database skills as needed for tough problems.

In addition to writing many reports that other programmers said could not be written, I am also very fast at writing them. In a reference written by one of my early managers, he described my skill level in this way:

"She could write complex Performance reports in a fraction of the time other programmers could."
